Once described by Emma Crichton-Miller (a respected writer on art and design) as the craft world’s Cinderella, frames play a crucial role in displaying art, including paintings, to viewers. They enhance the look and protect the art. In fact, frames are as important as the paintings themselves. But how do you find a frame that complements your artwork?
Frame Material
One of the most important factors to consider when looking for a frame for your painting is the framing material. Art frames come in different materials. These include ceramic, wood, metal, etc. But the quality and durability of the material are what matter most. For instance, while metal frames are great, they can rust and distort the look of the entire piece. From experience, wood has proven to be the safest choice.
Other Factors
- Frame style, e.g., colour and shape (should complement your art).
- The frame shouldn’t be so extravagant as to overshadow the artwork, which is the star of the show.
